چکیده

Hen eggs injected with either sodium monofluoroacetate (1080) or diphacinone are being used by the Department of Conservation for the control of stoats (Mustela erminea ). The eggs remain attractive to stoats for at least 1 month. This study investigates the persistence of the toxins in eggs incubated at two temperatures of 1080 in eggs incubated at both temperatures and the amount of diphacinone in eggs incubated at of diphacinone in eggs incubated at days. More diphacinone could be injected into eggs to compensate for this loss. However, eggs are seldom likely to be exposed to temperatures as high as eggs containing 1080 or diphacinone can be left in bait stations for at least 28 days without loss of efficacy to stoats.

Effectiveness of diphacinone to control stoat populations

In the spring of 1996, work was undertaken to establish the effectiveness of the anticoagulant poison diphacinone to control stoat (Mustela erminea) populations. We attempted to determine whether stoats in the wild would take diphacinone delivered in eggs and, if they died as a result, what proportion of the stoat population was killed. Stoats were live trapped, and radio transmitter collars we...

Preliminary Bait Trials with Captive Stoats

Preliminary trials were undertaken to determine which of three baits (fish-based catfood, hen eggs, and dead mice) commonly used to catch stoats (Mustela erminea) was the most attractive. All six stoats ate eggs and mice significantly more often than catfood. Combining results from both sexes, there was no significant preference between eggs and mice; when results were divided by sex however, f...

Secondary Poisoning of Mammalian Predators during Possum and Rodent Control Operations at Trounson Kauri Park, Northland, New Zealand

A poison baiting operation at Trounson Kauri Park in Northland, New Zealand using first 1080 and then brodifacoum targeted possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) and rodents (Rattus rattus, Rattus norvegicus and Mus musculus). Predatory mammals were monitored by radio telemetry during the operation. All six feral cats (Felis catus), the single stoat (Mustela erminea) and the single ferret (Mustela fur...

Stoats (Mustela erminea) provide evidence of natural overland colonization of Ireland.

The current Irish biota has controversial origins. Ireland was largely covered by ice at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and may not have had land connections to continental Europe and Britain thereafter. Given the potential difficulty for terrestrial species to colonize Ireland except by human introduction, we investigated the stoat (Mustela erminea) as a possible cold-tolerant model species fo...

Observed responses of captive stoats (Mustela erminea) to nest boxes and metal collars used to protect kaka (Nestor meridionalis) nest cavities

Artificial barriers, such as nest boxes and metal collars, are sometimes used, with variable success, to exclude predators and/or competitors from tree nests of vulnerable bird species. This paper describes the observed response of captive stoats (Mustela erminea) to a nest box design and an aluminium sheet collar used to protect kaka (Nestor meridionalis) nest cavities. The nest box, a prototy...
